Celtic and Rangers want to sign Elland Road star, he last started a game for Daniel Farke in August

Gelhardt has failed to start a single game for Leeds in all competitions since August. Indeed, the U20 England man has only played eight times. A far cry from the young striker Alan Shearer said is “magic”.Indeed, he has fallen down the pecking order behind Joel Piroe, Georginio Rutter and Patrick Bamford – the latter of which has scored two goals in two games. Even Mateo Joseph is probably preferred now.

Salford City v Leeds United - Carabao Cup Second Round

It comes after a series of injuries this season and just three goals in 20 games for Sunderland during the second half of last season. He needs game time – but Daniel Farke is said to be keen to keep him now. The Mail, though, claim Gelhardt has interest in his services. Celtic and Rangers want to lure the striker north of the border. Blackburn Rovers, Preston North End and Hull City are also keen on signing him.

What a move it would be for Gelhardt. The chance to compete for a title and if he joins Rangers, he would even be playing in the Europa League knockout rounds – with the Gers winning their group. But realistically, would he start? Probably not. Celtic have options up top and Rangers boast plenty, including former Leeds man Kemar Roofe. He must be guaranteed game time if he moves to Glasgow.

And then, Leeds may have to consider a striker signing. Right now, Gelhardt is not needed but as soon as an injury or two crops up – we will really need depth. Gelhardt does need a loan exit, though.
