Rangers could be in pole position for Josh Doig transfer after Ibrox exit news

Doig, who is Verona’s current left-back, could be on his way out if Yilmaz arrives, and according to Toro Goal [31 December], Rangers are among the clubs to have made contact over a potential £5.2million deal.

With negotiations said to be ongoing between Rangers and Verona for Yilmaz, it would be a natural progression to see those talks turn to Doig’s future, with the deal set to benefit both clubs.

This would allow Rangers to move into poll position, ahead of Leeds United, Torino and Monza, in their pursuit of Doig, using Yilmaz as a potential bargaining chip and an easy way to advance negotiations over a potential January deal.

At just 21 years old, Doig already has plenty of experience in first-team football, making 32 league appearances for the Serie A club since he joined from Hibernian in 2022, where he had played 62 Scottish Premiership games.

Rangers are thought to be interested in bringing players to the club who have previous experience in Scotland to help their title bid, as the time taken to adjust to the level and style of the league will be less than anybody arriving from abroad.

Yilmaz, meanwhile, has failed to impress since arriving at Ibrox and has been unable to overtake Borna Barisic in the pecking order, meaning his game-time has been limited when the Croatian is available.

His exit could make way for the incoming arrival of Doig, just as Doig’s exit would be made easier by the arrival of Yilmaz, in a deal which lends itself to both sides’ ambitions in the January transfer window.

Having already represented Scotland at Under-21 level, Doig should be looking to take a step up in his career with an eye on making the senior squad for the Euros, and a league-winning campaign in Scotland with Rangers could be the perfect springboard.
