Chris Sutton destroys ‘ridiculous’ Rangers star Leon Balogun during showdown v Celtic

Chris Sutton has destroyed Rangers centre-back Leon Balogun for a “ridiculous” incident during the Gers’ Old Firm derby clash with Celtic.

At Celtic Park on Saturday, December 30, Philippe Clement’s unbeaten streak as the Light Blues’ manager came to an end as Brendan Rodgers’ team won 2-1 to take all three points. Goals came from Paulo Bernardo and Kyogo Furuhashi.

The Rangers keeper was left in no man’s land after Balogun underhit his pass back to Jack Butland, giving the Gers a chance to tie the game, but Sutton was quick to bash the defender for his effort. The Gers were lucky to avoid falling behind early in the match.

He made the following statement on December 30, 12:46 on Sky Sports Main Event: “Well, he got lucky, didn’t he? That’s absurd coming from Balogun.

All around carelessness

Rangers’ biggest match of the season was undoubtedly an Old Firm match, but they didn’t begin the match in a way that reflected the importance of the match because they were typically careless with nearly every move.

Balogun’s “ridiculous” error went unpunished, but his awful throw back to Butland put the Rangers defender and his team under immediate pressure. Even though Celtic missed their opportunity to seize it, it was more luck than skill.

When the Senegalese forward failed to even get the ball out of the penalty area before Celtic’s opening goal, Abdallah Sima was equally careless with his bad clearance, finding Bernardo with plenty of space on the edge of the box instead.

Rangers must correct these careless errors, particularly in the most important games, if they are to have any chance of winning the Scottish Premiership this season. If not, they should bid farewell to their title chances.

Regarding Balogun personally, he appeared to be playing at a completely slow tempo during the whole Old Firm match on Saturday, which resulted in a red card halfway through the second half. He let his team down, and the Rangers cannot afford to have players play so poorly in the biggest games.

In other Rangers news, it has been stated that the team has already drafted a fresh £2.5 million offer for a January signing.
