A move for the former Motherwell striker is thought to fit the Gers’ winter budget, and a loan agreement might be a viable option for all parties.
According to Football Insider, van Veen is interested in returning to Scottish football, while a deal for Shankland is far more likely in the summer transfer window.

Rangers could sign another forward in January after signing Fabio Silva on loan from Wolves for the remainder of the season.

Shankland has been heavily linked with a move to Ibrox, and he has entered the final 18 months of his contract with the third-placed Edinburgh club.

Hearts have held contract talks with captain Shankland, who has scored 16 goals in all competitions this season, but he has yet to sign anything.

Van Veen has five goals in 15 games this season, but he scored 29 goals in 44 outings for the Steelmen last season.
Rangers are still unbeaten under Philippe Clement and sit second in the table ahead of their Old Firm meeting with Celtic on Saturday (30 December).
