Rangers: Joshua Barrie shares latest on January loan move for Groningen striker Kevin van Veen

According to journalist Joshua Barrie, Rangers are “unlikely” to pursue Groningen striker Kevin van Veen in January.

The Daily Record reported last week that Van Veen was connected with a loan move to Ibrox for the second half of 2023-24.

Last season, the 32-year-old scored 29 goals in all competitions for Motherwell before joining Groningen in June.
Jonny McFarlane discussed a move for the Dutchman on The Rangers Review podcast [27 December, 27m 20s].

“If you’re looking at a loan deal for a striker, you need someone you know is going to score in the Scottish Premiership,” he went on to say.

“I don’t think it’s stupid to look at getting a striker who has performed well in the Premier League on loan.”

“I’ve seen quite a bit of him, and I like him.” He’s a big player with quick feet who is also skilled and can create something out of the top drawer.

“When he was playing for Motherwell, a big fish in a small pond, he was absolutely terrific for them, scoring goal after goal.”

However, Barrie shot down the rumors, adding, “From what I’ve been told, it’s unlikely to happen.”

Proven track record

On the surface, a move for Van Veen appears to make sense. After all, his record in Scottish football is on display for all to see.

Van Veen found his feet at Motherwell after struggling at Scunthorpe United, when he set a new record for goals in a season.

If the Rangers bring in any new players in January, they will almost certainly do it through the loan market unless any present stars leave.
