Celtic didn’t sign a striker for one key reason during the summer transfer window

According to Sky Sports’ Anthony Joseph, Celtic’s seeming inability to buy a striker during the summer transfer window was due to one major factor.

According to Joseph, the reason Celtic never bought another striker was due to another summer signing’s ability to play that forward role.

“Celtic almost were saying, certainly what I was told, that they’re not going to get a striker in before the end of the window,” Joseph remarked [The Celtic Exchange Podast].

“And, according to one source, Luis Palma can also play up front.” And I recall saying that it’s looking increasingly doubtful that Celtic will re-sign Kvistgaarden, that they won’t bring in a striker since Luis Palma can also play up front, because that’s what I was informed.”

Now I understand why the club, or Brendan Rodgers, did this. With Hyeongyu Oh as Kyogo Furuhashi’s backup, having Palma as a third alternative eliminated the need to pay for another frontman.

Indeed, Daizen Maeda can serve as a lone striker, but this strategy had one fatal drawback. Injuries and the poor form (or quality) of the other summer recruits appear to have been overlooked.

Rodgers has taken a significant hit with the injuries to Maeda and Leil Abada. This, combined with the failures of Hyunjun Yang and Mikey Johnston to impress, meant that the Celtic manager’s ability to use his team effectively has hampered results on the field.

With no creativity from the wide areas, Kyogo has struggled to find the goalscoring form that Celtic fans have been accustomed to, as evidenced by the team’s recent troubles.

Hopefully, with the benefit of hindsight, Rodgers will now turn to January to see if he can bolster that section of the club since the Celtic manager will need to boost his firepower if he wants to win this title and the £60 million that comes with it.

Meanwhile, ‘legs like oak trees’… David Martindale is awestruck by the 25-year-old Celtic player’s body.
