‘Stretched Credibility’ – David Tanner slams Aberdeen boss over more Rangers complaints

David Tanner slams Aberdeen boss: David Tanner has dismissed Barry Robson’s complaints regarding the Viaplay Cup final loss to Rangers, citing the “worst Dons performance at Hampden in living memory.”

Rangers: Robson complaints slammed after 'worst' Aberdeen display

On December 20, the talkSPORT host responded on Twitter to the Aberdeen manager’s assertions that his team was denied two obvious penalties in the 1-0 loss on Sunday, focusing instead on the team’s lack of quality.

Tanner noted that Robson was also grumbling in the other direction following his team’s 1-1 draw at Pittodrie on November 26 after they gave up a late spot kick to the Light Blues. Robson allegedly “stretched credibility” at the time and was now attempting to divert attention away from his own team’s shortcomings in the cup final.

Tanner stated: “Robbo stretched credibility when he said, in response to last month’s stonewall pen for Rangers, that “not every pull of a shirt inside the penalty box is a penalty.”

“In actuality, it was the worst Dons game at Hampden in recent memory, and I was present when Robbie Winters scored.”

Repercussions

While it would have been hard to maintain credibility to suggest Aberdeen was deserving of the victory over the weekend, one could argue that the decisions made in the cup final were incorrect and that there are issues with the refereeing.

However, Robson’s opinion is probably going to be disregarded if he continued to complain when things went one way and then the other.

To be fair, the Dons manager has lost both times, but he has probably undercut himself after confounding commentators by defending his team’s performance in the aftermath of the game, in which they managed just one shot on goal.

In a miserable game of attrition, James Tavernier’s 115th goal for the Rangers brought home the first trophy of the season and set the stage for Philippe Clement’s comeback.

If the Belgian had been in Robson’s shoes, he might have been dissatisfied, but he probably would have been just as angry if his team had provided so little in the way of future opportunities.

In the end, it was evidently a very disappointing day for the Dons and a crucial one for the Gers, giving them the perfect foundation on which to build as interest in a revived SPFL title race grows.
