Rangers in hunt to leapfrog Celtic with astonishing prize money first as coefficient kings rip up Scottish rulebook

A stunning win over Real betis in Seville will have the Europa league readies rolling into the Ibrox coffers.

The cash injection that Rangers banked by beating Betis in a Sevilla thriller will boost the Ibrox coffers by €2.5million at least, with further earnings set to trump Celtic’s Champions League prize pot for the first time ever.

Kemar Roofe’s late winner in a 3-2 success propelled Philippe Clement’s side into the last 16 of the Europa League, scooping a further £3million in prize money and a seeded spot in the draw. Just over 18 months on from final heartbreak against Eintracht Frankfurt, Rangers fans are dreaming of a repeat run to Dublin

There’s plenty of football to be played and that remains a pipe dream for now, but there are further riches to be collected if this is the start of another extended continental adventure. Rangers are in line to do what no Scottish team has ever done and bank more from a Europa League run than their rivals in the UCL in same season.

In addition to €5million for exiting the Champions League at the playoff round, the Light Blues have earned a €3.6m Europa League starting fee, a €2.9million 10 year coefficient payment, a €1.6m share of the market pool, €4.61m in performance fees and fans have snapped up €7.5m worth of tickets. That takes their total money banked so far to €25.21m. After the poor financial results were released last month, the board will be rubbing their hands.

Now, that’s less than Celtic have collected for their Champions League campaign. The Hoops benefitted to the tune of €34.5 all told after finishing bottom of their group. However, their earning opportunities are over, with the readies still able to roll in for their rivals.

They’ve already surpassed their total earnings from the 2022 run to the final in Seville. All in, that provided an £18.1m windfall. After conversion, they are already sitting at £21.5m for this season, and based on the 2022 figures, they could boost that by another £8m.

that makes it a six point week for the Scottish Premiership clubs and the first time ever that all three have managed victories in the same European week.

And that sparked a toast from Philippe Clement, who also saw his side overtake Celtic in the 10-year coefficient rankings thanks to their first ever triumph on Spanish soil against Spanish opposition.

“It’s already a big achievement to come first in this group, against a team like Betis and also a good team like Sparta Prague who play really good football and who will also go a long way in Europe, I think,” said the Belgian.

“I’m really pleased about that. It’s also a statement and a good thing for Scottish football.

To take this spot, it’s important for the co-efficient and for the future.

“We’re going to play now a little bit later. We’re going to start Europe now in March, which means two games fewer in February. That’s good that we can use that period to make the team stronger with more training.”
