Olympic gold medallist slams current Fiji 7s side

Olympic gold medallist slams current Fiji 7s side: The current men’s HSBC SVNS Series squad, according to former Fiji 7s star Vatemo Ravouvou, is undermining their cause because players prefer “to be the star” rather than work for the team.

The Rio 2016 Olympic gold medallist for the Fiji 7s made his remarks after the HSBC SVNS Series’ first two legs in Dubai and Cape Town. Even though Fiji placed third in Cape Town, detractors continued to highlight the team’s performance and head coach Ben Gollings’ track record. But Ravouvou told the Fiji Times that the players should cooperate instead of pursuing individual glory and that coaching was not the issue.

“Everyone is beating Fiji right now, and there’s no cohesiveness in the team, particularly from the front and back lines,” he declared. They must be combative. There is too much individual play and everyone wants to be the star, that’s all I can see from the Dubai 7s and even the Cape Town 7s.

“The support is delayed, and we need strong line breakers.” The boys need to reflect on what went wrong after their second tournament. They have to play not just for themselves but also for their families and the nation, giving it their all. The boys must perform; the coaching is excellent.

After finishing fourth in the Dubai 7s, Fiji lost to New Zealand in the bronze medal playoff match, 12–17, before travelling to Cape Town. In Cape Town, they defeated Ireland 14–7 to win the bronze medal.

In the cup quarterfinals, Fiji managed to overcome France in a golden point sudden death match, despite the French being down to five players after two yellow cards. Ultimately, Fiji’s match against Australia in the Cape Town semifinal ended in a 7-24 loss. The men’s standings currently have Fiji in third place, eight points behind leaders Argentina. The next tournament will take place in Perth, Australia, on January 26–28.
