Aberdeen manager Barry Robson called Rangers’ VAR penalty award at Pittodrie “soft.”

The Dons manager was speaking after Rangers drew 1-1 with his team in the Scottish Premiership.

A SOFT PENALTY

Aberdeen manager Barry Robson expressed his dissatisfaction with the Rangers penalty award, which James Tavernier duly dispatched, after the game, where Bojan Miovski had fired Aberdeen in front.

These are mostly the result of Sam Lammers’ apparent block on defender Stefan Gartenmann, who was ruled to have pulled Goldson’s shirt.

Rangers penalty frustrations are raised by Barry Robson.

“Soft, I think, I’ve watched it back,” Robson told BBC Sportsound. “I believe Rangers are astute.

“He’s been blocked, and they’re telling us that blocking is also a foul, so he blocks him without the tug.”

“And it’s a tiny little tug, and if this is how we’re going with football, it’s not looking good.”

“However, in my opinion, you should book him for the block, or the game should be stopped for the block before it, which was not done.”

“So VAR did its job, but VAR didn’t check on Goldson on Polvara two minutes later.”

“If we’re going to check with VAR, we have to do it all right, not just one part.” They got that wrong in my opinion.

“If you’re going to give a penalty fine, you need to check everything and then obviously they’ve missed it again today.”

When asked what he said to Nick Walsh at the end of the game, Robson replied, “I just hope you’re all right.”

“All I asked for was that. That was the only thing I asked.”

A missed opportunity

With Celtic having lost to Motherwell the day before, this will be viewed as a missed opportunity by Rangers.

Nonetheless, a late James Tavernier penalty, awarded for a tug on Connor Goldson’s shirt from a corner, rescued the Ibrox side.

From a Rangers standpoint, this was a very poor reaction, with a disastrous start leading to a lack of quality in front of goal, and the result has frustrated fans.

Rangers supporters expected their team to respond, and while the fallout will be less severe due to the late penalty, it must be considered two points dropped against Barry Robson’s side.
