In a recent podcast interview, Budgie, the legendary drummer of Siouxsie and the Banshees, delved into his profound experiences in the music world, offering rare insights into pivotal moments in punk and post-punk history. Budgie, who played drums on *Cut*, reminisced about the creative energy behind The Slits’ debut album. “It was raw, chaotic, but magical,” he said. Working alongside producer Dennis Bovell, Budgie helped shape the band’s fusion of punk and reggae, a sound that was radical for its time. “Ari Up and the band were fearless. They weren’t just breaking musical rules; they were redefining what it meant to be a band,” he added.

 

The drummer also shared his love for Two-Tone ska, the British movement that merged Jamaican ska rhythms with punk energy in the late 1970s. Budgie credited bands like The Specials and The Selecter for their cultural impact. “Two-Tone wasn’t just music; it was a movement of unity during a divisive time,” he said, acknowledging how its rhythm and message resonated with him as a percussionist.

 

When discussing influences, Budgie paid homage to John Bonham, Led Zeppelin’s powerhouse drummer. “Bonham’s grooves were monumental. He had this uncanny ability to make the drums sing, and that’s something I’ve always tried to emulate in my own way,” he noted.
