Rangers were involved in a 4-4 thriller against Union Berlin during their fourth pre-season friendly of the summer on Saturday (27 July).

Quick-fire goals from Janik Haberer, Cyriel Dessers and Jordan Pefok set the tone for the match, with the Bundesliga taking a 2-1 lead after 21 minutes, with a Tom Lawrence brace overturning the deficit.

Haberer equalised just before half-time before David Preu hit the back of the net for Union Berlin on the hour-mark, with Dessers grabbing his second of the afternoon to draw even once again.

Here’s how Ibrox News rated the performance of each Gers star during the game.

Jack Butland – 5

Little the goalkeeper could do against any of Union Berlin’s goals. Could have stopped the opener but was unlucky to see Haberer’s effort squeeze under him.

James Tavernier (Off for Leon King 60′) – 3

Looked to be struggling when Union Berlin stretched the Gers’ backline, falling over before Pefok’s penalty. Won some bonus points back due to his role in one of the goals.

John Souttar – 4

Both centre-backs had a lack of protection so hard to judge individual performances in defence. Won most duels when called upon but conceded three goals.

Ben Davies (Off for Leon Balogun 80′) – 4

Similar to Souttar. Won duels and tackles when called upon but was left vulnerable by Rangers’ open play in the middle of the park and high-flying full-backs.

Jefte (Off for Ridvan Yilmaz 70′) – 2

Struggled with positioning and tracking back throughout the first half, leaving the opposition winger with multiple opportunities to score at the back post. Should be a concern ahead of next season.

Connor Barron – 4

Failed to get a proper foot in the game due to Union Berlin’s attacking speed, with other midfielders overshadowing him throughout the 90 minutes.

Tom Lawrence offers positive in Rangers v Union Berlin

Mohamed Diomande – 7

Smart assist for Dessers’ opening goal but immediately cancelled out after giving away a penalty, which was smashed past Butland. Positives and negatives to take away from the game.

Tom Lawrence (Off for Ross McCausland 70′) – 9

Despite being linked with a move away this summer [Fanatik], he was one of Rangers’ biggest positives against Union Berlin, notching twice in the first half to keep Clement’s men in the game.

Scott Wright – 6

Hugely impressive run to set up Lawrence’s first goal of the afternoon, but could not offer much else when linking up with Tavernier down the right flank.

Oscar Cortes (Off for Rabbi Matondo 60′) – 4

Clearly working his way back to full fitness and match sharpness after missing the Ajax match. Not involved enough but made several gut-busting runs into the penalty area. Attempted to help defensively but failed.

Cyriel Dessers (Off for Danilo 80′) – 8

Took Rangers’ opening goal superbly well and played an important role in the second, showing fans exactly what he’s capable of amid exit links this summer. Great skill on show to draw the score back to 4-4 in the second half.

Substitutes

Leon King (On for Tavernier 60′) – 5

Had a couple of chances in the Union Berlin penalty box but was not able to add much control to the Gers’ style of play.

Ridvan Yilmaz (On for Jefte 70′) – N/A
