Philippe Clement urgently needs at least five more new signings after Rangers youngsters failed to take their opportunity during the preseason says Derek Ferguson.

The Light Blues secured their first new signing in weeks with the loan capture of Wolfsburg’s Vaclav Cerny on 26 July but the 26-year-old is only the second experienced arrival after back-up keeper Liam Kelly this summer.

Clement has seen his side lose all three of their official preseason fixtures and ex-Ibrox favourite Ferguson doesn’t believe the likes of Ross McCausland have made indisputable cases to carry the load going forward.

And with time rapidly running out before the season starts at Hearts next week he is clear that further signings have to be sourced urgently.

He exclusively told Ibrox News“Some of the youngsters have had an opportunity and one or two have not taken it.

“You look at guys like McCausland who’s done okay, but can we rely on guys like that over the course of the season? No.

“So guys like this Cerny, if he’s a top player like we’re tending to hear, we need him.

“But we need [reinforcements] as quick as because we’re days away from the start of the season. We’re in Europe, which is massive.

“With this group of players we’ve got at the moment we need five or six [in] and if we don’t, I tell you what, it’s going to be a long, hard season, that’s for sure.”

Rangers to add more signings after Vaclav Cerny loan from Wolfsburg

Connor Barron’s arrival after his exit from Aberdeen looks like being a very useful addition, while Oscar Cortes proved in the short time he was available last season that he can have an impact.

But with the rest of the business prior to Cerny done with an eye on depth and development the Rangers squad currently looks weaker than how it ended last season, when it was already in need of strengthening.

McCausland will be expected to remain an important part of the rotation this season but Cerny’s addition out wide was necessary.

Now that Sam Lammers has been moved on a striker is surely required and with further space being made on the wage bill by Connor Goldson’s exit it could finally mean an attempt to convince Hearts to part with Lawrence Shankland.
