Sunderland have confirmed that defender Ben Crompton has joined non-league side Tamworth on a one-month loan deal. The 20-year-old centre-back impressed during Sunderland’s 5-1 victory over Tamworth in the National League Cup earlier this week, scoring a goal in the process. Following his strong performance, Tamworth approached Sunderland with an interest in securing a loan move, which has now been finalized.
Crompton, who made his first-team debut for Sunderland in an EFL Cup match against Crewe Alexandra last season, will now get the chance to experience senior football at the National League level. This loan deal offers him an opportunity to gain valuable match experience with Andy Peaks’ Tamworth side, who are set to face Dagenham & Redbridge in their next league fixture.
Sunderland’s academy manager, Robin Nicholls, spoke positively about the move, stating that it would provide Crompton with a chance to further develop his game in a competitive environment. The loan will be reassessed in January, after which a decision will be made regarding his future at the club. Crompton, who joined Sunderland from Shrewsbury Town, is under contract with the club until the summer of 2025.
