Rangers should have hired Derek McInnes as their manager when they had the chance, Chris Sutton has said.
Speaking on Sky Sports Scotland (20 October) after the Gers’ 1-0 loss to Kilmarnock at Rugby Park, Sutton bemoaned the Gers missing out on McInnes, who led the hosts to victory.
McInnes was approached over the then-vacancy in the Ibrox dugout while manager of Aberdeen back in December 2017, but the former Gers midfielder rejected their advances to stay at Pittodrie [BBC].
Sutton said: “Rangers should’ve given the job to Derek McInnes all those years ago, they’d have been alright.”

Although Kilmarnock’s victory at Rugby Park was hardly one littered with beautiful football, there’s no denying that McInnes’ side was deserving of three points over a lacklustre Light Blues outfit.
Marley Watkins’ late winner may have come via a simple long throw and ball over the top, but Killie were able to claim the points by forcing the issue, something which the Gers never came close to doing.
The purposeful nature of their style of play will have left the packed away end frustrated, particularly given that Philippe Clement’s side seemed to lack anything resembling a clear style of their own.
Football management’s ruthless and ever-changing nature suggests that had he been appointed at Ibrox in 2017, there’s very little chance that McInnes would still be in charge in late 2024.
However, that’s a question many a Gers fan will have been asking on the way out of Rugby Park, as McInnes’ side took the spoils and piled the pressure on the current incumbent.
