Philippe Clement fires a Rangers dagger at Ibrox summer signing after costly moment in Kilmarnock defeat

Rangers’ defeat in Ayrshire was heartbreaking.

Following Rangers’ 1-0 loss to Kilmarnock, Philippe Clement has pointed out a mistake made by one of his summer acquisitions.

Rangers had a chance to go within one game of the Premiership summit when Celtic and Aberdeen, the top two teams, drew 2-2. However, a goal from Marley Watkins cost them the win, dropping them six points behind the champions in first place and the Dons in second.

Clement quickly realised that Neraysho Kasanwirjo, who had joined on loan from Feyenoord in the summer, was playing the Killie forward line onside as the manager calculated a costly loss. “It was not good enough,” he said to BBC Sport Scotland.

We gave away too much in duels and didn’t produce enough in the first half. We took charge and created opportunities in the second half, which was much better, but it is terrible to lose in that way.

“We must adjust and play on any kind of surface. Although the football played on Kilmarnock’s ground is different, everyone visits at some time during the season, and we have performed well here in the past. It’s easy to say “intensity,” but you also need to find room to play, and Kilmarnock did that quite effectively. Without a doubt, we could have performed better in our duels.

“We need to improve on our right full-back’s tardiness in stepping up to catch guys offside during the goal. There are thirty more league games left beyond the eight we’ve already played. It’s about applying the lessons we’ve learnt from these games.
