Alex Rae has spoken out about a bid that Rangers have received for James Tavernier.

The 32-year-old has been linked away from Ibrox with Trabzonspor having an initial approach rejected by the Gers [Fabrizio Romano].

In response, Gers coach Rae discussed the Englishman in his press conference after the Manchester United friendly defeat, as transcribed by The Scottish Sun on 20 July.

He said: “There has been speculation throughout the course of Tavernier’s time here. He has been linked many times, there have been lots of rumours. We just deal with it as it happens.

“But I have no idea. I don’t even know what the bid is. That is above my pay grade. It is not really fair on me to say. You are talking about him as if he has left, he is still very much part of the squad.”

James Tavernier could leave Rangers

The right-back has been an integral part of the Light Blues’ squad over the years and certainly would be a huge loss.

Tavernier contributes more than your traditional defender with his goal and assist output representing a large chunk of the squad at Ibrox.

Last season, in a year that ended in frustrating circumstances, he registered 24 goals in all competitions with 10 Scottish Premiership assists [FotMob].

It has to be said that for Philippe Clement to lose that sort of output from his squad could prove to be highly detrimental.

Although someone like Dujon Sterling would represent a positive replacement option, the 24-year-old doesn’t come close to his goal and assist return.

With Tavernier now 32, a sale for a positive fee could prove to be a smart piece of business to reinvest into the squad ahead of the new campaign.

It is yet to be seen whether Trabzonspor will return with a second offer and if the Gers will allow their captain and talisman to go.
