As Brisbane’s back-five coach, the former Broncos captain worked two days a week at the team’s training facility, where he was instrumental in helping Walsh improve as a player. In an attempt to assist the flamboyant fullback in becoming the NRL’s top No. 1, Boyd was given the responsibility of guiding the fullback through game analysis.

Along with teaching the dynamic fullback line-running skills, he also taught him how to execute Boyd’s signature three-on-two overlaps. However, Boyd told the team he wouldn’t be coming back in 2025, thus the Broncos would need to hire a new coach for Walsh and their other outstanding players on the backfield for the upcoming campaign.

According to News Corp., a week before Kevin Walters was fired as the Broncos coach, the 337-game NRL legend told Walters in private that he was leaving because he was unhappy with the way the team’s football program was going. Boyd was well-liked by all in the Broncos football department, but he was particularly well-liked by star fullback Walsh.

Walsh thanked the Queensland great for molding him into the player he is after the Broncos advanced to the grand final of the previous season. “I am really grateful to ‘Darbs’. Prior to the Broncos’ 2023 grand final loss against Penrith, Walsh stated, “I wouldn’t be here doing what I am doing without him.” “Having him close each week and getting tips off him and picking his brain as much as I can … he has been massive.”Not just this year, either, in my opinion. When I was a junior at the Elite Player Development Squad (EPD), Darbs would come to our sessions and teach us how to sum up situations and play three-on-two.” Boyd is expected to remain a football department member even though he is leaving the position.
