Rangers will only look to sign Brandon Williams if they are able to shift players to the Ibrox exit first, says Derek Ferguson.

The Daily Record reported on 15 August that the former Manchester United full-back had been a Gers target since the end of last season, and the latest injury to Ridvan Yilmaz could make him a greater priority.

The 23-year-old is available on a free transfer after leaving Old Trafford, having been on loan at Ipswich Town last season, but Ferguson doesn’t think the Light Blues are in a position to add another left-back to cover for injury, even on a free transfer, unless one were to leave first.

There has again been interest in Yilmaz himself from Turkey this summer [Krampon Sports, 9 August] but after arriving on a deal worth up to £5million two years ago [Sky Sports] the pundit doesn’t think the club would be able to get anywhere near that to sell the former Besiktas man even if he was fit.

With regards to signing Williams as he exclusively told Ibrox News: “Again, we need players to get out the door to free up a bit of money.

“So in terms of bringing in another player we need players to get out the door.

“If we can get fees for them all the better but the fee that we paid for Yilmaz we ain’t going to get anything near that any more.

“You’d be lucky to get £1m or £2m to be honest with you.”

Rangers like former Manchester United defender after Ipswich loan

Philippe Clement looks like he has completed his possible transfer business at left-back after replacing Borna Barisic with Jefte.

The Brazilian has made a positive start to life at the club and may even replace Yilmaz longer-term, but the Turk’s latest injury has likely brought his future in Glasgow into greater question.

He was also hurt at a crucial point last season as the title challenge fell apart so the manager would probably like more senior cover.

But with greater priorities in attack, midfield and in the centre of defence he is likely to need to channel any proceeds generated by late exits from the likes of Todd Cantwell [Alan Nixon, 26 August] towards those positions.
