Domino effect blocking Gers plans after leading £5m striker race

The transfer merry-go-round hasn’t really kicked into gear yet, something that Philippe Clement has lamented as he looks to rebuild Rangers.

Players like Joan Jordan and Cheikh Niasse continue to be linked and a permanent deal for Abdallah Sima has also been discussed by the Gers boss.

Until players start to move out though, his hands could be tied with Rangers not the only club affected by this sort of scenario.

At the beginning of June, Rangers were said to be “leading the chase” for Kosovan striker Albion Rrahmani.

Since then though, it has gone quiet.

Rangers stuck as Albion Rrahamani given transfer notice

A £5m fee is what Rapid Bucharest are said to be looking for and they have already rejected an offer of around half that from Slavia Prague.

Rapid chief Dan Sucu has been vocal throughout the summer with prosport reporting that he is in no mood to put his hands in his pockets for more players for Neil Lennon, unless Rrahmani is sold:

“With us, taking into account that there is a great possibility that Rrahmani will not leave, I don’t think we will go down that track again. We have already brought in a striker, Rrahmani we hope to stay.

“Burmaz remains 100%. We are pretty much covered on that post. From my point of view, yes, it is a closed track Louis Munteanu. As long as Rrahmani does not leave, we will not go.”

Munteanu has been mentioned as a possible target for Rapid with the Fiorentina striker looking to leave Italy, the Romanians have already signed a striker though.

Rangers waiting for first domino to fall in transfer stalemate

Sucu is clearly happy with keeping his star man though, unless a suitable offer is presented.

Rrahmani is also being considered across the city by Celtic, however, should they manage to persuade Norwich City to part with Adam Idah, that interest is likely to end.

Philippe Clement will be buoyed by the return to action of Danilo and the arrival of Hamza Igamane.

Already, without breaking the bank, he is in a better position than last season.

Given the £5m fee, it would be expected that Cyriel Dessers will have to be sold to make way for the younger and more dynamic striker, however, the big Nigerian has openly admitted that he doesn’t want to leave.

Sometimes, all it takes is for one transfer to kick off another three or four.

Should Rangers sell Dessers, a move for Rrahmani is more likely and Rapid could follow up their interest in Munteanu.

If Dessers is still at Rangers when the window shuts, Clement knows that he has a 20-goal striker on his books as backup – there are worse scenarios to have to contend with, even if it isn’t ideal.
