Michael Keane has signed a new contract at Everton. Keane had multiple options as a free agent but has decided to extend his stay on Merseyside
David Moyes has explained Everton’s reasons for renewing Michael Keane.
Keane, previously a club record signing, penned a one-year extension to his stay on Merseyside on Friday, just days after his existing deal had expired.
He becomes the Blues’ third defensive renewal this summer, joining Jarrad Branthwaite and captain Seamus Coleman in re-committing his future.
And Moyes revealed the motivation in securing Keane for another 12 months.
He said “We are pleased Michael has agreed to stay with us.
“His performances at Fulham and Newcastle at the end of last season showed the value he can bring to our squad.
“We will need his experience and professionalism as we go forward.”
Keane is set to be Everton’s fourth choice centre-back behind the automatic partnership of James Tarkowski and Branthwaite as well as Jake O’Brien.
But the 32-year-old, who received offers from other clubs prior to agreeing fresh terms, believes he can still play an important part under Moyes.
“I love Everton and have been massively proud to play for this club since the day I joined so I’m delighted to extend my stay here,” said Keane.
“The manager wants a competitive squad and I still feel I have a lot to give to Everton.
“We’ve been through a difficult few years but it’s an exciting time ahead for us as players and our brilliant fans.
“We’ve got a world-class new stadium to play in, and our form under the manager last season shows there’s a lot of reasons to be positive.
“I’m looking forward to being part of it.”
