When Real Betis are expected to announce the signing of Junior Firpo from Leeds United
It has been in the pipeline for weeks but Real Betis are now expected to complete the signing of Junior Firpo, not least because the Leeds United left-back has dropped a pretty major hint.
After a season that saw Firpo produce 14 goals and assists from left-back and help Leeds win promotion back to the Premier League, it looks as if the Dominican Republic star won’t get a crack at the top tier.
Details have emerged this week over the details of Firpo’s contract and talks between his representatives and the club, which were confirmed in Leeds’ retained list on May 17. Leeds wanted to give him a pay cut.
Indeed, Leeds were offering Firpo a smaller wage than the one he earned when joining from Barcelona. More in line with a club expected to fight for relegation, than one that had just finished in ninth in 20-21.
Junior Firpo’s move to Real Betis could be announced today
With Leeds and Firpo unable to come to an agreement, Firpo officially leaves Leeds on Monday. It is the final day of his contract and ends a four-year stint that has been up and down, but ended on a big high.
Plenty of clubs have been linked with Firpo, with a return to Barcelona even touted while some of Italy’s biggest sides showed interest. But a return to Betis was always on the cards, which is Firpo’s home club.
A side that includes Diego Llorente and Marc Roca, and could sign Mateo Joseph from Leeds with the striker keen to join Betis. Now, Estadio Deportivo say Firpo’s announcement could come this weekend.
