EXCLUSIVE;West Ham plan to sign £25m ‘Areola upgrade’ after confirmed exit news
Graham Potter wants to sign Aaron Ramsdale and improve his goalkeeping options at West Ham United, sources have told Football Insider.
West Ham are set for changes in multiple positions this summer after they announced that Danny Ings, Lukasz Fabianski, Vladimir Coufal and Aaron Cresswell will all leave the London Stadium at the end of the season.
Fabianski’s departure will open up a vacancy for a new goalkeeper to fill, and sources have told Football Insider that the Irons see Ramsdale as a marked upgrade on both the 40-year-old and Alphonse Areola.
Like West Ham’s overall form, Areola has been hit and miss this season, and Football Insider sources have said that the relegation release clause in Ramsdale’s Southampton contract has alerted the Irons.
Most Premier League clubs on the hunt for a new goalkeeper are set to have their eyes on Ramsdale this summer, and with West Ham now confirmed to be one of those sides, he’s very high on their shortlist.
West Ham ‘weighing up £25m Aaron Ramsdale move’
Former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson told Football Insider that if he were to sign any goalkeeper this summer, he’d choose Ramsdale, but it remains to be seen if West Ham’s higher-ups feel the same.
Football Insider previously revealed that Southampton’s relegation triggered a £20m release clause in his contract at St. Mary’s, but sources have said that David Sullivan may still see the fee as too big.
Ramsdale’s release clause could climb as high as £25m, based on various factors, but sources have told Football Insider that the England shot-stopper would still seen as an improvement on Potter’s current options at West Ham.
