Leicester’s board has terminated Ruud van Nistelrooy contract deal with club after setting unwanted record
Leicester City are facing up to another campaign in the Championship after failing to beat the drop – but it remains to be seen if Ruud van Nistelrooy will continue with them or not
Van Nistelrooy impressed in an interim capacity at his previous club, Manchester United, before taking on the challenge of guiding Leicester away from relegation. Speculation over his future has naturally followed as a result of his failure to do so, with the Foxes now facing up to the prospect of an instant return to the second tier.
While it remains to be if Van Nistelrooy is open to the prospect of managing in the Championship, he has spoken about the prospect of bouncing back next season and shared what he feels needs to be done in order to do so.
The stance from those within the corridors of power at the club is mixed, though. As revealed by The Athletic, there is respect for the way Van Nistelrooy has handled himself during what has been a turbulent tenure to date.
There is also an acceptance that the former striker walked into a difficult scenario, inheriting a squad which was built by a predecessor who lasted just 12 league games.
That, coupled with Van Nistelrooy’s previous experience of blooding and developing young talent during his first senior management role with PSV, could yet convince the club’s chairman, Khun Top, to persevere with Leicester’s current manager.
Such a move could prove to be unpopular with fans, though, with many thought to be in favour of making a fresh start under a new manager in the Championship. Disillusion at the club is high after nine consecutive home league defeats without scoring, which is an English record.
