Blackburn Rovers defender Dom Hyam has a one-year option in his contract, according to a report from the Lancashire Telegraph.
Blackburn Rovers signed 28-year-old Hyam in the summer of 2022 from fellow Championship side Coventry City, with this season marking the beginning of his third season at the club.
He signed a three-year contract upon arrival, so fans have been under the impression that one of their key men could be out of contract by next summer. Rovers stated back when Hyam originally signed that he had a deal that runs until June of 2025.
However, it has now emerged from the Lancashire Telegraph that Hyam’s deal includes a one-year extension option.
If activated, it would mean the important centre-back can remain at Blackburn Rovers on his current terms until the summer of 2026. It would give Rovers more time to tie Hyam down to a longer term deal beyond then if triggered.
Since joining from the Sky Blues, Hyam has become a staple in the Rovers squad, making 83 league appearances across the last three Championship seasons while chipping in with two goals and two assists.
A focus shift for Rovers
John Eustace has been keen on making additions to his squad across this summer, notably players that know the Championship well and are good enough to keep Blackburn Rovers in the division for another season.
With the likes of Makhtar Gueye, Yuki Ohashi, Andi Weimann, Danny Batth and Jack Barrett joining, signings in have been the main focus of the summer. As such, there has been little time to discuss possible contract renewals and tying current players down to new deals.
There were reports of a new contract for Hyam back in January, however with a managerial change and a relegation dogfight at hand, things were put on the backburner.
The matter could be revisited at some point this season though to avoid any uncertainty heading into next year.
A tricky 2025 ahead?
Dom Hyam isn’t the only man in this situation at Ewood Park.
Ryan Hedges and Zak Gilsenan also have deals running until 2025 with one-year extension clauses. Dilan Markanday and Jack Vale are also in that list, though Markanday could be off to Chesterfield on loan before the window ends and Vale’s Blackburn Rovers future seems uncertain.
Six senior players are also out of contract in 2025 with summer signings Batth and Weimann in that list after signing one-year deals, alongside ex-Coventry City captain Kyle McFazdean.
It’s looking likely that John Eustace will have to make some big decisions across the next year.
Hyam is one he’ll be determined to keep though, so the matter may be discussed further once the transfer window has come to a close.
