Leeds United target set to sign new contract – Ipswich Town striker could be out of reach
Leeds United were officially promoted to the Premier League on Monday night after Sheffield United failed to beat Burnley. Now the club has a huge task on their hands to build a squad for the English top flight.
Reports over the past few links seem to point to the fact that Daniel Farke and Leeds will strengthen two areas: goalkeeper and midfield. Since Karl Darlow was made the starting keeper, and Illan Meslier was benched, multiple targets have been linked with a move to Elland Road. The most recent being Burnley’s James Trafford.
This week, rumours concerning West Ham star Tomas Soucek continue to grow. The 30-year old could leave London in the summer, with 12 months left on his contract.
Joel Piroe has been Leeds’ top scorer this season with 19 goals. The striker is also the top scorer in the Championship. He scored four goals in the 6-0 win over Stoke City that sealed promotion.
But now, in a shock turn of events, the Whites have been linked with a new striker. According to Football Insider, Leeds had their eye on Ipswich Town striker George Hirst. However, the Scotland international has been offered a new deal ahead of this summer. Hirst is yet to sign the deal, but Leeds and Burnley are monitoring the situation ahead of their return to the Premier League.
Is George Hirst any better than Joel Piroe?
If Leeds United are looking for a new striker, George Hirst is not the man. Despite him being older than Joel Piroe, he has also failed to outscore the Leeds front man over the past few seasons.
This year, with Ipswich Town in the Premier League, Hirst has managed two goals in 21 appearances. Leeds would be much better off keeping Joel Piroe than trying to sign the Scotland international.
