James Tavernier reveals ending his contract with Rangers this summer no matter the terms and conditions

Rangers are open to selling James Tavernier this summer as their captain enters the final year of his contract at Ibrox, sources have told Football Insider.

Tavernier is coming to the end of his 10th season at Rangers and a seventh as captain, with the Gers set for another second-place Premiership finish and preparing for their Europa League quarter-final second leg.

However, for arguably the first time in his career in Govan, Tavernier hasn’t been an automatic first choice as Rangers’ right-back this term, with both Philippe Clement and Barry Ferguson opting to bench him.

With Tavernier now 33 and heading into the final year of his contract at Ibrox, sources have told Football Insider that Rangers may well look to cash in on the defender and finally move him on this summer.

Rangers ready to make James Tavernier decision

Football Insider revealed that Rangers’ incoming owners 49ers Enterprises are plotting six new signings this summer, and given their options at right-back, it’s likely Tavernier’s position will come into focus.

Dujon Sterling and Feyenoord loanee Neraysho Kasanwirjo – who unlike Vaclav Cerny, is unlikely to be bought by Rangers permanently – have both struggled with injury, allowing Tavernier to keep his place.

With Ridvan Yilmaz impressing in several of his displays as a makeshift right-back and Nicolas Raskin coming to the fore as Rangers’ stand-in captain, the exit door is looking increasingly likely for Tavernier.

Tavernier transfer to fund Rangers rebuild

Last month, Football Insider revealed that Rangers’ next manager, whoever that turns out to be, will be given a £25million budget by 49ers Enterprises this summer, as they prepare to take charge at Ibrox.

Such a level of spending will certainly help the Gers to fund their six transfer targets, but that will also need to be facilitated by selling out-of-favour players.
