Premier League striker ‘open’ to Newcastle move as Howe eyes Wilson replacement
It was recently reported that Ipswich’s Liam Delap is unsure about a move to Newcastle United, questioning how much game time he’d receive now Alexander Isak looks likely to stay.
That could be a theme if we look to sign a quality back-up option to the Swede, and a budget alternative and familiar name has been linked once again.
Someone willing to fight for their place and arrive in a supporting role may be necessary, and a long-term target could provide the solution to the problem.
Long-term target one to watch?
According to The Chronicle, Newcastle are weighing up a move for Dominic Calvert-Lewin should Callum Wilson leave this summer, with the player’s camp in contact over a potential transfer.
The England international is not signing a new deal at Everton this summer and would be available on a free transfer, meaning we could replace one experienced out of contract striker with another.
Eddie Howe is thought to be a long-term admirer of Calvert-Lewin and must think he can get the best out of the 28-year-old after a tough few season on Merseyside.
Lee Ryder reports that the player himself is open to joining Newcastle this summer and that his camp have been in contact with Newcastle to see if we are still interested after we attempted to sign the forward last summer.
It’s thought the striker is looking for a £100,000 wage packet that could fit into our budget given his free agent status, with Anthony Gordon also likely to give a good reference as a former Toffees teammate.
Is he reliable cover?
Alexander Isak is undoubtedly Newcastle’s main man and that fact is unlikely to change in the near future.
Names such as Benjamin Sesko and Jonathan David have done the rounds in the media, but it’s highly unlikely players of such profile will be interested in being used as a rotation option.
