Man United see £60m transfer bid ‘turned down’ as Ivan Toney alternative emerges

Manchester United are working around the clock to fine-tune and upgrade their squad.

Noussair Mazraoui and Matthijs de Ligt are en route from Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich after Ineos agreed a combined fee worth £51.5million for their signatures. The former Ajax double act are set to follow Leny Yoro and Joshua Zirkzee to Old Trafford, and yet, further additions are still on radar.

However, in the first instance, United will need to sanction player sales in order to generate much-needed funds, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka set to sign for West Ham for around £15million already. Here, we take a look at the latest news, views, and transfer rumours from other publications and provide our own insight on those updates.

United see £60m offer ‘turned down’

Football Insider and various other sources flag-up ongoing interest from United in Jarrad Branthwaite and argue United have seen another bid rejected by Everton. This one is thought to be in the region of £60million including add-ons, rather than cash in full for the England U21s regular.

Branthwaite is still a genuine target for United this summer, despite De Ligt inbound and Yoro over the line. Two offers worth £43million and £50million were turned down by Everton for Branthwaite.

MEN Sport says: “As is so often the case, this all comes down to money. Nothing has changed in that United still want to sign Branthwaite this summer. However, further outlay (in all positions) is dependent on the club granting and finding exit routes for those on the transfer list, officially or unofficially.

“At the very least, Branthwaite will seemingly set United back £65million. They can’t part with that sort of money right now after Yoro and Zirkzee plus Mazraoui and De Ligt cost them just shy of £150million all-told.”

Ineos ‘target’ Toney alternative move

Reports from Sky Sports reckon United are considering a swoop for Dominic Calvert-Lewin this summer. It’s said Calvert-Lewin is among a number of forwards Ineos have on their shopping list amid ongoing links to Ivan Toney, with both players heading into the final 12 months of their contracts.

No would-be fee is mentioned in that update. It does, though, emphasise the need for outgoings.

MEN Sport says: “As much as Calvert-Lewin and Toney in particular would strengthen United – at least as cover and competition for Rasmus Hojlund and Zirkzee – another forward is way down the priority list at this stage. The club will, probably, look towards a holding midfielder next in their recruitment drive.”
