Joe Aribo relegated for second time since Rangers exit

Joe Aribo and Southampton have been once again relegated from the English Premier League.

The midfielder joined the St Mary’s outfit in the summer of 2022 for €7.10m [Transfermarkt].

Aribo has since made 102 appearances for Southampton, scoring nine goals and assisting one.

He suffered relegation to the Championship in his first season at the club, and although Southampton returned to the top flight last year, they have yet again been demoted.

Tottenham Hotspur’s 3-1 win condemned Southampton to a Premier League exit and Aribo to his second relegation in three years since departing Rangers.

The 28-year-old joined the Ibrox side in 2019 under Steven Gerrard.

He played 149 times in light blue, with his most memorable moment coming in the 2022 Europa League final.

Aribo put Rangers 1-0 up against Frankfurt before they ultimately succumbed to a penalty shootout defeat.

He is contracted at Southampton until the summer of 2026.

“It’s been an amazing journey being part of this special club,” Aribo said on social media after departing Rangers in 2022.

“I hold Rangers very close to my heart as they gave me the opportunity to showcase my talent on a bigger stage.

“Playing at Ibrox was a dream & I’m glad I got to experience it. I’m happy I was able to play a part in the historic 55-league title-winning season.

“I’d like to thank everyone associated with this great club for all you’ve done for me during my time here, you’ve always made me feel welcome & I’ve always had your full support.

“I’ve developed into an even better player, credit to the supporters who always had my back and stayed patient during the tough times.

“We created a lot of memories together, memories that I will carry with me throughout the rest of my career. I wish the club nothing but the best for the future and I’ll always be checking in.”
