Tom English believes Rangers desperately need a more creative signing after their 2-1 victory against Motherwell on Saturday (10 August).

While Cyriel Dessers and Vaclav Cerny were able to secure all three points, outscoring Robin Propper’s own goal, the BBC journalist believes that Philippe Clement’s main issue emerged with substitutions.

Dujon Sterling, Ross McCausland, Rabbi Matondo, Leon Balogun and Kieran Dowell were all brought on as substitutes during the match, attempting to secure all three points against the Steelmen.

Speaking live via BBC Sportsound on Saturday (10 August, 5:15pm), English said: “I think Rangers were one-paced in attack, they’re a team that desperately needs creativity.

“Nothing off the bench, to think they brought on five subs, lack of quality, lack of depth. They were just kind of hanging on.”

Rangers to secure more signings before August 30?

Clement and Nils Koppen have done well in their rebuild amid working on a shoestring budget at Ibrox, with multiple players already brought into the squad.

While English certainly has a point about the lack of dynamism in the starting lineup, and even with the substitutes, there are two factors to consider.

The main issue could be with the manager’s selection of substitutions, with Jefte and Danilo left on the bench, rather than the lack of depth.

The other issue could be put down to injuries and absences. Oscar Cortes has already sustained an injury, putting him out of action for a few weeks, and Hamza Igamane has yet to make his debut.

Igamane, 21, looks to be a rather exciting forward, but until he becomes sharp enough for the Scottish Premiership, Clement will need to work with the players he has right now.

With the lack of funds at Ibrox, the only scenario that the Gers will be able to sign a more creative player, such as Todd Cantwell who wants to leave, is if they can make a sale before the transfer deadline.
