‘Barry Ferguson is a misplaced appointment, he’s no chance of getting Rangers job’

Barry Ferguson oversaw his first Rangers loss as manager on Saturday (1 March) as the Ibrox club fell 2-1 against Motherwell at home.

He replaced Philippe Clement last month on an interim basis after the results under the Belgian took a turn for the worse.

Ferguson, 47, played 409 times for Rangers with his coaches Neil McCann, Billy Dodds and Allan McGregor also turning out for the Glasgow giants.

He has insisted he wants to “judged at the end of the season” when it comes to landing the role on a full-time basis.

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Pittodrie between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – has hit out at Rangers and lifted the lid on Ferguson’s chances of being offered the permanent job.

Ferguson appointment ‘pandered to Rangers fans’, says Wyness

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted Ferguson was a “misplaced appointment” to “pander to the fans”.

The Scot resigned from his last managerial role at Alloa Athletic just over three years ago but now faces a Europa League knockout clash with Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce this month.

Wyness insisted Ferguson won’t be “anywhere near the thinking for next season”.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I don’t think he’s got any chance of getting the job full-time.

“I think it was a misplaced appointment – they should’ve stuck with Clement until the end of the season.

“Clement had the European experience, so I don’t understand it.

“The results were bad, I get that, but there was just no point in doing it.

“To pander to the fans by bringing Barry in and a group of ex-Rangers players in just smacks of the Rangers of old.
