Rangers next manager: Marathe and Cavenagh talks timeline set out
Rangers’ agreed takeover by the 49ers Enterprises means that there are decisions ahead to be made, including over the next manager.
Philippe Clement was relieved of his duties after a 2-0 defeat against St Mirren on 22 February proved to be the final nail in the coffin for Rangers chiefs.
Barry Ferguson has since been appointed as interim boss, winning one and losing one of his opening two games.
49ers prepare for Rangers manager talks
Clement‘s departure at Ibrox felt as though it was a long time coming, but the appointment of Ferguson as his successor suggested that the hierarchy were not prepared for the change.
The appointment seems to have been made in mind to raise standards at the club again and bring in a face that knows the club better than many.
However, if the Gers are to really push on under their new ownership, it certainly feels like someone with more experience would be required.
Record Sport have reported [5 March] that this is the route the 49ers are going down and Paraag Marathe and Andrew Cavenagh are said to already been considering their first managerial appointment.
The report states that the consortium are planning to speak to candidates in the coming weeks, with the hope that a new man is in place ready for 2025-26.
Rangers need an ambitious appointment
As an interim boss, you can certainly understand the reasoning behind the appointment of Ferguson at Ibrox.
However, the 49ers will be preparing to revamp Rangers once a takeover is completed and therefore, any managerial appointment will have to be reflective of their ambitions.
As it stands, the only thing left to play for at Rangers this season is the Europa League, and there are concerns that Ferguson doesn’t require the necessary experience to see the Gers through this.
