‘It’s true’: Borussia Dortmund ace responds when asked about joining Leeds United
Leeds United’s Junior Firpo is, without doubt, the stand-out left-back in the Championship right now.
But, after he scored in successive Championship games to put Leeds United a goal up in Saturday’s eventual 1-1 draw with West Brom, how much further can that statement be taken?
Is Junior Firpo one of the stand-out left-backs in English football? What about Europe? Spanish publication Sport seem to be believe so. Junior Firpo was labelled a ‘world-class’ talent in his ‘footballing and physical prime’ after drawing Leeds level in the 3-1 comeback win over Championship title rivals Sheffield United at Bramall Lane.
For a player who has divided opinion really since his £13 million switch from Barcelona back in 2021, this has been quite the turnaroud.
It’s easy to forget, meanwhile, that a number of left-backs were linked with a January move to Elland Road, at a time when Firpo was struggling for fitness after weeks on the sidelines. Leeds reportedly wanted Matt Targett from Newcastle United.
Daniel Svensson was mentioned as well, prior to his switch from Danish outfit FC Nordsjaelland to Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund.
Daniel Svensson addresses Leeds United links and Borussia Dortmund move
Speaking to Ruhr Nachrichten in Germany, the talented Sweden international was asked directly about those Leeds links for the first time.
Now, Svensson labelled Dortmund a ‘very, very big club’ when putting pen to paper with last season’s Champions League runners-up. And, when shedding further light on his decision to move to Germany despite interest from the likes of Leeds, Liverpool and Benfica, this was a statement Svensson was keen to reiterate.
“It’s true, there was interest from other clubs,” he says in response to that Leeds poser. “But, when things got concrete with Borussia Dortmund, I just wanted to come here.
