Steven Gerrard appointment at Rangers given Ferguson backing after ‘surprise’ twist

Steven Gerrard has been backed to return to Ibrox for a second spell in charge should Rangers seek out a new permanent manager.

Barry Ferguson has taken over as Rangers manager until the end of the season following last week’s sacking of Philippe Clement.

The Gers great kicked off his tenure with a 4-2 comeback win against Hibernian at Rugby Park and will likely be quietly hopeful of staying on beyond this season.

However, it looks likely that Rangers chiefs will look to bring in a new man in time for the 2025-26 campaign, with numerous names being linked.

Gerrard, who guided Rangers to Scottish Premiership title glory in 2020-21, is considered the favourite among the bookmakers to become the next permanent manager at Ibrox.

The 44-year-old recently left his position at Al-Ettifaq and has a 55.1 per cent win rate across his managerial career, which also includes a stint with Aston Villa.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News prior to his brother Barry landing the Gers job, Derek Ferguson said: “It’s a surprise Steven left his position in Saudi. It’s one Rangers fans would probably welcome.

He got the club to 55 titles, although people would argue it took him three years to get there. Ultimately, he did get there and he’s held in high esteem – most fans adore him.

If that appointment was to be made, I’ll be honest with you, I’d welcome it. If Steven Gerrard was to come in, I wouldn’t be against it.”

Who are candidates to become next Rangers manager?

Beyond Gerrard, Issame Charai – previously part of Clement‘s coaching staff – and Barry Ferguson are high on the list.

Indeed, it may well be that the job is Barry Ferguson’s to lose if he can do more than just steady the ship at Ibrox.
