Nearly 30,000 season ticket holders quit Premier League club and don’t come back

West Ham have suffered a huge drop-off in season ticket sales since moving to the London Stadium, with more than half of the initial 50,000 season ticket holders not renewing

West Ham United have experienced a brutal loss of 29,000 season ticket holders since their transition to the London Stadium.

This summer will mark nine years since the Hammers left the Boleyn Ground at Upton Park, their home for more than a hundred years, to move into their new 62,500-capacity stadium, which was the centrepiece of the 2012 Olympics.

However, fans have consistently expressed dissatisfaction with the multi-purpose venue’s lack of atmosphere, as it wasn’t designed solely for football. These sentiments are reflected in recent season ticket figures released by Claret and Hugh.

Out of the initial 50,000 who purchased season tickets for West Ham’s first season at the London Stadium, 29,000 have decided not to renew. While this doesn’t necessarily mean only 21,000 original supporters remain – some may have temporarily opted out and returned – it’s a worryingly steep drop in a short span of time.

In the worst years, 2017 and 2021, only 89 percent and 88 percent of fans renewed their season tickets, equating to more than 5,000 supporters dropping out each time. In 2024, West Ham had 48,500 regular season ticket holders, down from a peak of 55,000 in 2022 and 2023, reports the Mirror.

Earlier this month, Hammers fans protested against ticket prices and the removal of concessions for certain supporter groups.

The Hammers have had a challenging campaign, with the appointment of Julen Lopetegui failing to deliver results and an expensively assembled team struggling in the post-David Moyes era.

Now, Graham Potter, the successor to the former Spain and Real Madrid manager, is on a mission to elevate the Hammers in the league table and leave Lopetegui’s lacklustre reign in the past.
