Jimmy Calderwood’s funeral possession passes Ibrox Stadium

The funeral procession for football manager Jimmy Calderwood passed Ibrox Stadium.

Calderwood, who managed Aberdeen and Dunfermline, passed away last month aged 69 after battling early-onset dementia.

His funeral was held in Glasgow today, with the procession passing Ibrox between 1.30pm and 2pm.

The Glasgow-born coach, a lifelong Rangers supporter, was honoured by the club with a Rangers pin following his death.

Calderwood’s career in management began in the Netherlands with Willem II in 1996.

He then managed NEC Nijmegen before returning to Scotland, where he was appointed manager of Dunfermline.

In one of the club’s most successful periods, he led the team to promotion and a highest-ever SPL position of fourth in the 2003/04 season.

He also guided Dunfermline to a Scottish Cup final and secured European football qualification.

Calderwood then spent five years at Aberdeen, where he helped the team reach the last 32 of a European competition for the first time since 1986.

Under his management, the team achieved a memorable 4-0 victory over Copenhagen at Pittodrie and a 2-2 draw against Bayern Munich in the next round.

Calderwood also managed Kilmarnock, Ross County, Go Ahead Eagles, and De Graafschap.

He went public with his dementia diagnosis in 2017 to raise awareness of Alzheimer’s and dementia.

The much-loved manager leaves behind an enduring legacy in Scottish football.

That’s according to Jermain Defoe amid speculation the title-winning boss could be set to replace under-fire boss Philippe Clement. Liverpool icon Gerrard has endured a tough management career since leaving Glasgow after being shown the door Villa Park door before his ill-fated Saudi Pro League gamble with Al-Ettifaq came to an abrupt end earlier in the season with the club facing a relegation scrap.

However, with the club facing up to the prospect of a trophyless campaign under Clement – barring a massive collapse by Celtic in the Premiership or a Europa League triumph.
