Steven Gerrard next job edges closer as Rangers manager at risk of being fired
Rangers was dumped out of the Scottish Cup by Queen’s Park on Sunday and Philippe Clement is under increasing pressure at Ibrox with Steven Gerrard linked with a return
Embattled Rangers boss Philippe Clement has broken his silence in the face of whispers about Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard possibly succeeding him at Ibrox.
The Gers bowed out of the Scottish Cup on Sunday following an upset by second-division underdogs Queen’s Park. With a daunting 13-point divide separating them from Scottish Premiership forerunner Celtic, the Europa League remains Clement’s squad’s sole viable shot at clinching silverware this term.
Post-defeat, Clement stood firm, declaring no intentions to resign and hinting that giving him the boot would be a knee-jerk error on the part of the club. He said: “I don’t expect this (being fired) because you can put another manager in this game – would it be different in that sense?
“Yesterday, progression was made, top eight in Europe and more consistency in the league and all these things, they don’t change in 90 minutes. If you do that and make decisions in that way, then you make only decisions out of emotions and not out of what’s been going on. So I don’t expect this now.
This statement unfolds amid rumors that Gerrard might be poised for a dramatic comeback to Rangers. The erstwhile Liverpool legend, who snagged the Gers’ first championship crown in a decade back in 2021, finds himself at a loose end having recently left his position with Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Ettifaq the previous month.
Ally McCoist, the Rangers legend with an impressive tally of 355 goals for the club, believes that a return to Glasgow could be the cure Gerrard needs after less than satisfactory spells in Saudi Arabia and Aston Villa. During his talk with talkSPORT BET, McCoist remarked: “It wouldn’t surprise me if Steven Gerrard came back to Ibrox.
