BREAKING NEWS:James Tavernier’s agent rejected Saudi Arabia’s offer

Philippe Clement and Nils Koppen have slowly continued to rebuild the current Rangers squad with each passing transfer window.

Lowering the average age of the squad has clearly been an important step in the rebuild, with the likes of Borna Barisic, John Lundstram and Connor Goldston all leaving Ibrox during the summer.

The likes of Jefte, Oscar Cortes, Clinton Nsiala, Connor Barron and Hamza Igamane have all proven an eagerness to bring youth to Ibrox, with Lyall Cameron the next figure to come through the doors.

And with each passing season, multiple figures are only growing older, leaving the hierarchy with difficult decisions to make.

At 33 years of age, second oldest in the squad only to Leon Balogun, James Tavernier has been heavily linked with a move away from Glasgow recently, and his future at Ibrox has been thrown into uncertainty.

Rangers not planning to extend James Tavernier’s stay

Sources, as per TEAMtalk, have revealed that there are no signs of a contract renewal for Tavernier after nearly 10 years at the club, with his current deal set to expire in 2026.

The 33-year-old joined the Gers from Wigan Athletic in 2015, playing 496 games and notching 129 goals and 139 assists in that time since. He’s become a legend at the club.

However, Clement, or whichever manager is set to be in charge as the summer transfer window rolls around, has a difficult decision to make when it comes to Tavernier’s career.

Philippe Clement continues to lower squad age

The Light Blues need a mix of young, energetic prodigies and experienced veterans if the team is to be successful over the coming few seasons, as proven by the decision to give Balogun a new deal.

Tavernier poses a more difficult question, though, given his key impact on the team, still boasting three goals and five assists in the Scottish Premiership this term from right-back.
