Rangers should offload Ben Davies to Birmingham City permanently this month

Rangers should offload Ben Davies to Birmingham City permanently this month, according to Derek Ferguson.

The centre-back joined the English League One club on an initial season-long loan last summer and the Blues would love to land him on a full-time basis [Birmingham World, 6 January].

Davies has struggled during his time at Ibrox – in contrast to his displays at St Andrew’s – and Ferguson cannot see any route back to him, especially with Clinton Nsiala having stepped in of late.

“I think it’d be best for Davies to depart,” BBC Sport pundit Ferguson exclusively told Ibrox News.

“If he can get a move away permanently this month, that’d be best for all parties. He’s not going to be in Philippe Clement’s plans, especially with Nsiala being brought in and looking excellent.

“Davies has had his time at Rangers. It’s not worked out and it’s probably for the best if he moves on.”

Rangers can recoup some money for Ben Davies

Davies is under contract at Ibrox until the summer of 2026, so Rangers can recoup some money for him either this month or at the end of the season.

It is clear the defender does not have a future in Glasgow as long as Clement is in charge, so it makes perfect sense to offload.

Assuming the previous reports of Birmingham wanting to land Davies permanently are true, there is no reason why a deal cannot be struck this month.

Rafael Fernandes has now arrived at Ibrox on loan and could stay permanently, meaning even more competition for Davies.

The sooner he is off the books, the better for everyone involved.

In other Rangers news, a “major change” could take place in the summer.
