Newcastle United told ‘special’ player who wants to join them is now destined for greatness

Newcastle United’s track-record in the transfer market under PIF ownership has been very impressive.

Indeed, for all the talk that Newcastle would go out and buy all manner of superstars when the PIF takeover initially went through, it has not proven to be the case.

The Newcastle United owners and recruitment staff have instead generally targeted younger players who can develop under Eddie Howe.

With that in mind, it seems wise to back them when they decide upon a player. They rarely get signings wrong, it would seem.

While the idea of signing a new goalkeeper from the Championship may seem a little strange given the sheer number of custodians the Newcastle United manager has in his squad, there must be a reason Newcastle want to sign James Trafford.

Speaking on Friday night, former Toon midfielder Scott Parker explained exactly why Trafford is so in-demand.

Trafford saved two late penalties against Newcastle’s greatest rivals Sunderland on Friday night to ensure Burnley kept a clean sheet against one of their fellow Championship promotion hopefuls.

It was a statement display from the 22-year-old, who will no doubt have thrilled Toon fans by denying the Black Cats twice in relatively quick succession.

Speaking after the game, Burnley boss Parker said: “This is a special keeper.

“This is a boy with huge, huge potential and I think you can see that. He’s confident, believes in himself and to get to the top, top level you need to have that certain belief and at times certain arrogance and Traff’s got that and he backs it up with what he does in between the two posts.
