Exclusive: Jack Butland set for Rangers comeback

Jack Butland is back in training with Rangers after his injury and is close to a comeback, sources have told Football Insider.

The Ibrox goalkeeper is hoping to return in either Sunday’s (19 January) Scottish Cup tie with Fraserburgh or next week’s Europa League clash at Man United (23 January).

Butland, 31, has missed the last four Scottish Premiership games after suffering internal bleeding in his leg.

He was discharged from hospital on 1 January and missed the Old Firm win over Celtic on the following day.

The nine-cap England international will also miss out on Wednesday’s clash with Aberdeen with Liam Kelly set to continue his stint between the sticks for Rangers.

Philippe Clement’s side have kept one clean sheet in Butland’s recent injury absence, conceding five goals and picking up eight points from a possible 12.

The ex-Stoke star had been a virtual ever-present for the Ibrox club this season in the run-up to his leg problem.

He has made 29 appearances across all competitions in the 2024-25 campaign and has captained the side if James Tavernier has been absent.

Butland poised to make Rangers return after hospitalisation

Butland has racked up 13 clean sheets in those outings, conceding 27 goals in league, cup and European games.

He joined Rangers on a free transfer in July 2023 after backup stints with Crystal Palace and Man United.

The shot-stopper, who has made 87 Gers appearances, is under contract until May 2027.

Clement’s side sit second in the Scottish Premiership and take on Aberdeen on Wednesday (15 January) with the chance to close the gap to Celtic to 13 points.

In Europe, the Glasgow giants sit eighth in the Europa League standings and are well placed to progress to a knockout round with games against Man United and Union Saint-Gilloise to play.
