Nottingham Forest make final decision on Lewis O’Brien after returning from LAFC

Lewis O’Brien moved to Nottingham Forest from Huddersfield shortly after the Reds beat the Terriers in the Championship Play-Off Final in 2022.

O’Brien was recommended by Ryan Yates who had found playing against the midfielder pretty tough during the 2021/22 campaign.

The player hasn’t exactly enjoyed a positive spell at Forest and ultimately his time on Trentside has been restricted to just 14 appearances for the club.

Last season O’Brien was on loan with D.C. United and after returning to Forest in the summer he was quickly on his way back to the MLS, signing for LAFC.

Now, O’Brien is facing a sense of deja vu and some details have emerged on the midfielder with the January transfer window now open.

According to The Sun journalist Alan Nixon, Forest have decided to cut their losses on O’Brien and try to sell him during January.

LAFC aren’t going to be signing the player permanently as they have used the majority of their funds to sign Olivier Giroud.

With the MLS outfit unable to raise the £5 million that Forest were hoping to recoup for him, O’Brien now faces being in a bit of limbo at the City Ground.

With years of experience playing in the Championship, the 25-year-old will likely be a target for a host of second-tier clubs although a loan looks a bit more likely.

O’Brien extremely unlucky with Forest transfer

Ultimately, for O’Brien, the stars just didn’t align for him at the City Ground but he can count himself extremely unlucky.

One of his first games for the club came in a 2-0 defeat to Tottenham on home soil and he really gave a good account of himself that day.

He wasn’t included in the 25-man squad for the second half of 2022/23 and he’s been fighting a losing battle at the club ever since.
