Rangers Appoint Sporting Director’s Uncle mick as new Ibrox Boss
Rangers’ Sporting Director Kevin Thelwell made the move after sacking Russell Martin late on Sunday night, after just 17 games in charge and with the club languishing in the bottom half of the Scottish Premier League, already nine points behind Celtic and 10 behind leaders Hearts.
Thelwell admitted that sacking his mate was, “The toughest decision I have ever had to make” and he also acknowledged that he would probably not be able to use Martin’s luxury villa in Spain for family holidays anymore.
He was keen to stress, however, that football was a “Ruthless business” and that he would “Live with the consequences” of his actions.
With Thelwell’s son recently appointed as Head of Recruitment and his sister-in-law set to take charge of Corporate Hospitality, Rangers owner Andrew Cavanagh has been convinced that keeping it in the family is best moving forward and that this new appointment is key to “Turning the tanker around.”
“Uncle Mick has an outstanding record in football management, and he was clearly the standout candidate,” Thelwell told Paddy Power News. “His Sunday league team, Dagenham Dynamo, has won the Essex and District championship ten years in a row – something even Celtic hasn’t achieved.”
Thelwell continued by explaining that;
“Mick has bought into the project, and we welcome him to the Rangers family.
He cannot wait to get started. “The international break will allow him to settle in and means he won’t be able to fall out with Nico Raskin for at least a fortnight.”
Next permanent Rangers Manager Odds
We understand that Uncle Mick’s two assistants at Dynamo, big Terry and mad Duncan, will follow him to Ibrox as part of a radical shake-up of the backroom staff.
Rangers’ fans will remain sceptical following Thelwell’s decision to hire Martin despite the former Scotland international managing to get Southampton relegated from the Premier League last season.
