RANGERS defender Emmanuel Fernandez has all the attributes to be a top centre-back, but he’s still a very raw talent.

That’s according to a Peterborough expert who watched him at close quarters last season.

The 23-year-old became Russell Martin’s fourth summer signing at Ibrox after completing a move from the Posh in a deal which could rise to £3.5million.

The 6 foot 5 defender follows the arrival of Max Aarons, Joe Rothwell and Cameron Lyall who had signed on a pre-contract.

Luton Town midfielder Thelo Aasgaard is expected to join the Ibrox club soon.

There was a mixed response from Peterborough fans at the news of Fernandez’ departure, with Ben Jones from the Peterborough Telegraph telling Clyde 1 Superscoreboard, he was a “polarising figure” with the support.

Jones highlighted the EFL Trophy final, which the Posh clinched in a 2-0 win over Birmingham City as an example.

He said: ” Fernandez was a colossus at the back against Birmingham City.

“The issue is that was very much in the minority of his performances.

“There were a lot of games where he looked so far off that player I think he showed at times he can be.

“There’s been a couple of silly red cards, lapses in concentration which I think have held him back.

“Rangers have taken a bit of a risk there, clearly Russell Martin believes in him a lot. I do think there’s a player in there but he is so raw at the moment.”

Having moved to Peterborough in 2021 from non-league side Ramsgate, Fernandez’s real breakthrough came last season where he played 42 times, scored five goals and was sent off twice.

Jones added: “He’s got all the attributes of a top centre-back: he’s tall, dominant in the air, likes to go into challenges.
