Rangers door now open to sign defender who loves working with Russell Martin

Russell Martin’s main priority in his first few weeks as Rangers boss will be to strengthen to playing squad ahead of next season.

The Bears held a press conference on Thursday (5 June) to unveil the 39-year-old as their new boss, and he will have no time to waste when it comes to preparing the team for the upcoming season.

His appointment will surely be a controversial one, as his Southampton tenure ended in disappointing fashion, with his style of football ultimately exposed far too often at Premier League level.

That Saints sacking has done little to damage his reputation in the game, and the former Bears centre back is seen as somebody who is capable of bringing a hugely attractive style of football.

Rangers should now look to sign Harry Darling

Martin will immediately be under pressure to work towards ending Celtic’s domestic dominance, with the Bhoys having raced to four consecutive Scottish Premiership titles since Rangers last triumphed under Steven Gerrard back in 2020/21.

Given his distinctive style of play, it makes sense for the former Southampton and Swansea City boss to target players who have worked under him previously, providing he feels they are capable of managing the expectations of playing at a club like Rangers.

Harry Darling was previously put forward by the Daily Record (23 May) as a potential option for Rangers if they ultimately opted to hand the reins to Martin, and the Bears should now act upon that suggestion.

Rangers are in need of centre backs this summer with several of their current options set to depart Ibrox, and Darling, who worked with Martin at both MK Dons and Swansea, could be an ideal option.
