UNBELIEVABLE NEWS;Russell Martin to recruit former Rangers player to be his assistant at Ibrox

Rangers are expected to be closing in on a managerial appointment at Ibrox.

Barry Ferguson left Rangers, having completed his period as interim boss, leaving the 49ers in search of a boss.

Although the 49ers’ takeover at Ibrox isn’t expected to go through until mid-June, the investors are keen to make an appointment sooner, rather than later, so groundwork can begin.

Russell Martin is one name being considered in Glasgow, alongside Steven Gerrard and Davide Ancelotti.

Martin readies Rangers staff

Although Ferguson did well considering the circumstances during his time with the Gers, the 49ers are seemingly keen to opt for someone with more experience to take them ahead.

It has been reported that Ancelotti is still keen on the job, although Gerrard was identified as the favourite.

That being said, Gerrard being spotted in Bahrain has cast doubt over the links to the role at Rangers, which could leave Martin in pole position.

According to the Daily Record (22 May), the former Southampton boss is already preparing for life in the hot seat, having identified his ideal right-hand man.

The report states that should the 39-year-old be given the job, he plans to recruit Maurice Ross to be his assistant.

The pair graduated the Scottish FA’s coaching system together, meaning there is already a relationship there.

As a former player, Ross certainly knows Ibrox and the people very well, too, which could make this a great fit.

It is said that Gerrard may need to rule himself out of the race in order for Martin to be given the nod and with Leicester City said to be looking at him too, Rangers have to know where they stand before losing both candidates from their grasp.
