Leicester City turn to Rangers manager target as Auchenhowie arrival blows Ibrox hunt wide open
The Rangers manager hunt continues with Steven Gerrard and Russell Martin now the two clear frontrunners.
Rangers have assessed the market thoroughly, with reports earlier in the week suggesting Rangers have a five-man managerial shortlist heading into next season.
This included Steven Gerrard, who currently tops the list, with Russell Martin, Rob Edwards, Davide Ancelotti and Ryan Mason.
But as news breaks that one of the leading runners is set to drop from the pack, the pathway has now been cleared for Rangers to get their man.
‘Russell Martin closing in on manager’s job’
Russell Martin is closing in on a move to relegated Premier League side Leicester City, according to reports.
Football Insider are claiming that Martin, 39, is set to replace Ruud van Nistelrooy at the Foxes after they were demoted from the English Championship.
Ex-Southampton and Swansea boss Martin has been out of work ever since leaving St Mary’s back in December and is a former Rangers player.
But now it looks like the pathway has been cleared for Rangers to go on and appoint Steven Gerrard as the club’s new manager.
Steven Gerrard to Rangers: cancelled charity games and barbers
Steven Gerrard spent three-and-a-half years at Rangers between 2018 and 2021 and rebuilt the club from 3rd place in the Scottish Premiership to unbeaten national champions.
Rangers haven’t quite been the same since the Scouser left and there is growing excitement about a potential return this summer.
Djibril Cisse confirmed Gerrard has cancelled his appearance at a friendly match in France next week, something which has added to the Ibrox rumour mill.
Gerrard’s former barber in Glasgow has also uploaded a clip of himself driving into the Rangers Training Ground, further adding to the speculation.
