Kevin Thelwell renews Everton interest at Rangers with bid for 2023 Goodison Park target

Kevin Thelwell might not join up as Rangers’ new sporting director until later in the year but the Everton chief is involved in the Ibrox club’s search for a new manager.

Rangers appointed Thelwell to the position earlier in the year with the 51-year-old bringing to an end an impressive few years as director of football at Everton.

With Dave King admitting the Rangers takeover is edging closer, Thelwell is set to join up with Rangers as a new era beckons under Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises.

But with all eyes on who Rangers will look to appoint as the Ibrox club’s new manager, it turns out Kevin Thelwell tried to convince one leading target over a switch to Everton in 2023.

There’s been some conflicting reports surrounding potential Rangers interest in Davide Ancelotti, who is looking for his first job in top-level management.

The son of legendary Italian manager Carlo Ancelotti, reports in Spain have suggested Rangers are closing in on Davide to replace Philippe Clement as permanent Rangers manager.

Those reports have been cooled back home in Scotland, with Rangers insisting there is no leading candidate as the club looks to recruit a new boss.

Now, historic reports surrounding Everton interest in Davide Ancelotti have reappeared in the press amid suggestions Kevin Thelwell tried to take the coach to Goodison Park.

Marca claim that Ancelotti considered the return to Merseyside, where he served under his father as Toffees manager, but eventually the Premier League side plunged for Sean Dyche.

Whatever the case, it suggests a familiarity between Kevin Thelwell and Davide Ancelotti, who could well be the dream team who must work together to rebuild a floundering Rangers squad.
