Leicester City made grave mistake in January 2025 that has come back to haunt them following Jamie Vardy exit

One transfer decision that Leicester City made in January this season has certainly come back to bite them.

Leicester City have confirmed that Jamie Vardy will leave the club at the end of the 2024/25 season.

Fans have reacted to Vardy’s departure from Leicester City, something that will bring big challenges for the club to move on after losing their key talisman, who has played a huge part at the club during his 12-year tenure.

There are several players that Leicester City could replace Vardy with, but none will certainly live up to the brilliance that he provided on a regular basis, especially in his swansong in the 2023/24 Championship campaign, scoring 18 throughout the league season.

However, the difficulty of replacing Vardy wouldn’t quite be as sizeable if Leicester City didn’t sanction the sale of one man with a top Championship record.

Leicester City made poor decision to sell Tom Cannon in January as struggles await to find Jamie Vardy successor

Vardy’s departure from Leicester City was always inevitable, although it has come at a difficult time for the club, having suffered relegation to the Championship.

Because of their relegation, it may be more difficult for the Foxes to find an adequate replacement for Vardy, who will need a player with a top record in the Championship to even start to fill his shoes.

Unfortunately for Leicester, they could have gone into the 2025/26 Championship campaign with Tom Cannon, a proven goalscorer at this level, who shone in the early stages of this season at Stoke City on loan.

In January, Cannon was permanently sold to high-flying Sheffield United for £10million.

Leicester attacking options could spark issues next season that must be rectified
